Tractor Registrations

No number, No problem

Twenty five years ago, the National Vintage Tractor and Engine Club recognized a common problem faced by owners of restored tractors – difficulties in registering them. In collaboration with other vintage clubs, this led to the introduction of the DVLA’s V765 scheme in 1990. The NVTEC has since assisted several thousand owners, not only with tractors of all makes but also with other agricultural machines such as combines and beet harvesters.

The DVLA now require NOVA (Notification of Vehicle Arrival) for imported tractors and members need to have import details and NOVA

To seek assistance from the NVTEC, the best way is to get in touch with John Porter, the club’s registration specialist, via email: registrations@nvtec-northsomerset.org.

Helpful Tips

Here are a couple of general points to keep in mind when dealing with tractor registrations:

  1. Acquire Information: When purchasing a tractor, try to gather as much information as possible from the seller about its past history.
  2. Restoration Considerations: Restoration work can sometimes remove helpful clues regarding a tractor’s past history.

Common Problems and Symptoms

While each owner may encounter different issues, most individuals start with one or more of the following symptoms:

  1. DVLA claims to have no record of the tractor.
  2. DVLA provides discouraging responses to inquiries.
  3. No visible number plate on the tractor.
  4. Partially missing registration number.
  5. Incorrect documents accompanying the tractor.
  6. Lack of documents from the seller.
  7. Tractor is a recent import.
  8. Neglected condition of the tractor for many years.
  9. Missing serial number.
  10. Use of parts from other tractors during restoration.

As a recognized national tractor club, the NVTEC played a significant role in the discussions with the DVLA that led to the establishment of the V765 Scheme in November 1990. The DVLA acknowledges the NVTEC’s expertise in dealing with tractors of all makes and models.

Thus far, the NVTEC has reviewed over 5000 applications, and documents from previous applications occasionally provide valuable clues that assist with subsequent inquiries. Some applicants have contributed factory records and other unofficial sources of information.

John Porter has access to a wealth of confidential trade literature and reference books accumulated over his years in the machinery trade. Additionally, many county council archivists have played a crucial role in solving mysteries, provided the right questions are asked.

Lastly, it’s worth noting that if the DVLA requires an inspection, they often accept the opinion of a local NVTEC member.
